Dharna against Meghalaya Govt nomination in GHADC

By BIPLAB KR DEY

TURA, March 14 - Garo Hills Progressive Alliance (GHPA) supporters today staged a dharna in front of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) opposing the nomination of Selma D Shira to the Council by Meghalaya Government.

The ruling GHPA had nominated Conrad K Sangma to the Council. Condemning the State Govt move which is allegedly in direct contravention of the Constitution of the GHADC, the protesters sought withdrawal of Selmas nomination.

The rules of the GHADC are very clear on the nomination of the 30th member and we cannot tolerate the act of the State Government. We condemn the act, said one present in the dharna.

In a scathing attack on Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sanmga, GHADC deputy CEM Augustine Marak termed the move of the State Government as nefarious.

The CM is very much aware of the rules of GHADC and the move to still seek the nomination of Selma D Shira smacks of nefarious designs to topple the current government in the Council. The people have chosen a non-Congress-led GHADC and the peoples mandate should be respected, said Augustine.

Augustine said that a delegation had already met the State Governor on the issue and would file a formal representation in the coming days. The interference of the State Govt in the affairs of the GHADC is bad and the timing of such interference is worse, added the Deputy CEM.

We will move the High Court if we dont get justice anywhere, warned Augustine.
