Dhaka pushed for bridge connection with Tripura

By Correspondent

AGARTALA, Nov 29 The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has pushed Dhaka to conduct a joint survey for setting up a bridge connecting Bangladesh with South Tripuras Sabroom subdivision, according to official sources here on Tuesday.

Though the date has not been finalised yet, the State Government expects the Bangladesh Government will soon call for joint survey for setting up the much needed bridge, said VG Janner, Director of Industries and Commerce.

Earlier, a joint team involving representatives from both sides had carried out a survey and finalised the alignment for the bridge to pave the way for resumption of bilateral trade through Sabroom LCS.

The bridge holds importance keeping in mind the State Governments demand to re-notify the dormant Sabroom LCS. The Centre has already agreed on denotifying the LCS but for that construction of the bridge is needed.

If the bridge is not set up, bilateral trade is not possible through Sabroom LCS and hence the State Government has been trying for it, he said. The Centre has already given its nod to the State Government to go ahead with the face-lift of the Muhurichar LCS in South Tripura district and Srimantapur LCS to provide better services to exporters and importers. However, owing to opposition from the Bangladesh side, the facelift work at Muhurichar could not be taken up yet.

A Bangladeshi envoy had paid visit to Sabroom to assess the ground reality before pushing for the bridge as well as bilateral trade through the dormant Sabroom LCS.
