By Correspondent

TURA, Sept 12 - Achik Indigenous Justice Initiative Forum (AIJIF) recently sent a memo to Railway Minister Piyush Goyal seeking positive changes for Mendipathar station, the first and only railway station in the entire State of Meghalaya.

The Forum sought the development of the railway linkage by introducing at least one train connecting New Delhi.

This will boost connectivity with rest of India. Further, we also want a freight train from Mendipathar station for the transport of coal from the region, director of AIJIF, Alex K Sangma said.

Mendipathar railway station was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi in 2014 and the only train that plies on the route is the one connecting Guwahati.

Railways is one of the safest ways to travel and makes travel and material costs lower. It is also important to the process of industrialisation and as such is imperative to the development of the region, said Chenang Momin, coordinator of the NGO.
