Development lowest in State, says BJP

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 16 BJP national spokesperson Prakash Javadekar could not resist taking a snipe at the Tarun Gogoi government saying that the Congress, which has failed in all the parameters of development and governance, was day dreaming that it will get the peoples mandate again.

Addressing mediapersons here on Wednesday, Javadekar asserted that Assam was poised for a change of guards as people here too have been affected by the all-India trend of voting for performance.

"People are not fools. Across the country people have been voting for good governance and performance. In Assam too I am confident of a change," said the senior BJP leader pointing out that the track record of the Congress in the State in the last 10 years was bleak like never before.

Comparing national statistics, Javadekar said that Assam was at its lowest on all aspects of progress, be it on the industrial development front or implementation of Central government schemes. He pointed out that the BPL percentage in the State was 50, whereas the all-India percentage was 25. "At a time when India was registering a 4 per cent agricultural growth on the average, the agricultural growth statistics for Assam was below 2 per cent," said Javadekar not forgetting to mention the alarming unemployment scenario in Assam. As of date Assam has the highest unemployment percentage in the entire country.

"Education is an important parameter of development. But the ruling Congress in Assam has miserably failed in the implementation of Central government education schemes," alleged Javadekar.

Javadekar, who could not help being satirical, said that though Assam failed on the development parameters, it has topped the list on three issues corruption, deteriorating law and order and price rise. He said that inflation was at its worst in Assam.

"In the last decade, Assam recorded 12,000 militancy related killings, 8,000 kidnappings and 5,000 extortion cases. All put together, Assam has suffered the worst at the hands of the Congress," said Javadekar.

He said that the BJP, which has been delivering good governance wherever it had got the mandate, will take into account the aspirations of the people of Assam and not let them down. "We are seeking a positive mandate from the people of Assam," he said.
