Deteriorating state of drainage system

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, March 19 Gravely concerned over the deteriorating condition of civic services in past a few years, the residents of Panbazar have expressed their resentment over the lack of initiative on the part of authorities to clean the drainage system of the area.

The people of the area are also anxious about the drain flowing from near the Bengali Girls School as the drain water carries petroleum waste products making the area vulnerable to fire incident.

We, the residents of the area have been demanding the authorities to make the water exit channels free from encroachment ensuring smooth water passage, which is mainly responsible for the water-logging problem in almost all the localities of Panbazar. Another demand is to restore proper drainage system, without altering the flow of water due to any new construction work, said Ajai Dutta, Ex-MLA and a resident of the area.

The residents also complained that various government departments are clearing new construction projects in Panbazar in a haphazard manner, without carrying out a detailed survey regarding the flow of drain water in the area.

The problem of urban floods is deteriorating in Panbazar with every passing year, whereas some localities like Saraswati Road face water logging almost throughout the year. Its the utter failure of the civic administration to drain out water, even in the dry season, alleged a local of the area.

The drain flowing from near the Bengali Girls School carries diesel waste coming out from Railways workshop, which may catch fire any time. Earlier also, several fire incidents have occurred in the area. Further the Railways have suddenly blocked the drain flowing by the side of Institution of Engineers, Dutta alleged.

Recently, GMDA chairperson Capt. Robin Bordoloi visited the Panbazar area, where the residents asked him to initiate steps for clearing the drain and improve the condition of footpaths and also to take measures against parking vehicles on footpaths.

The Guwahati development Department (GDD) and PWD should work in close coordination to clear the drainage properly well ahead of monsoons and ahead of any new construction activity; existing drainage capacity should be properly assessed and necessary steps should be taken to strengthen the drainage system, he added.
