SIVASAGAR, Jan 6 - Stressing the need for showcasing the vibrant ethnic culture of Assam before a global audience and create awareness among the younger generations towards the conservation of Assam�s ethnic culture, State Forest & Tourism Minister Rockybul Hussain today said that the State stood to gain a lot by harnessing its immense tourism potential.
Inaugurating the three-day Desang Utsav 2012 organised by the Sivasagar district administration at Desangmukh today, Hussain said that tourism apart, the rich and unique cultural heritage of Desangmukh too, offered great scope for attracting tourists from all over India and abroad.
Applauding the efforts of Sivasagar district administration for inviting Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh to participate in the Utsav, Hussain said, �This kind of festival would certainly develope better understanding among the people of Assam, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh and provide an opportunity to the self-help groups to find a market to sell their products,� and hoped that this event would go a long way in ushering in mutual trust and peace among the people of Assam, Nagaland and Arunachal.
Deputy Commissioner Jatindra Lahkar said with its abundant natural resources and diverse biodiversity, Desangmukh has specially been blessed by nature and the people, especially the new generation, should be aware of the unique value of these things.
On the occasion, a souvenir �Desang Abung�, edited by Ganga Mohan Mili, was inaugurated by noted educationist and former general secretary of Asam Sahitya Sabha, Nahendra Padun.
Upper Assam commissioner Syed Iftiqar Hussain, Mahmora MLA Sarat Saikia, Sivasagar SP Akhilesh Kumar Singh, Zila Parishad president Hema Gogoi, Municipality Board Chairman Rana Khan, Border Peace Co-ordination Committee president BP Bora, youth leader Pramir Gogoi and AASU leader Sarat Hazarika also attended the programme.
