Dergaon residents laud announcement of police academy

DERGAON, March 12 - Residents of Dergaon today expressed satisfaction after State Finance Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the setting up of a state-level police academy in the town while presenting the state budget.

Several police officers working at the Dergaon Police Complex welcomed the decision.

�The police academy will help impart quality training to police personnel, which is the dream of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. It is obviously a great news for Dergaon,� a senior police officer said.

Noted scientist Dr Choudhury Nath Saikia said that after upgrading the present Police Training College, it would be helpful if the Assam Police personnel are given training with the latest scientific techniques.

The PTC, which was established in 1948 at Salonibari in Tezpur and shifted to Dergaon in 1949, still continues to train Assam Police personnel.

A senior police officer told this correspondent that the academy will have several facilities like stadium, swimming pool, guest houses etc.

Social worker Atul Goswami and educationist Jatindra Nath Goswami welcomed the decision. �The academy will not only help train Assam Police personnel but may also lead to Dergaon becoming a tourist spot,� said Biren Chandra Saikia, president of NGO Aashray.

Dr Mridul Dutta, former Associate Professor of Economics at JB College, Jorhat, also said the budget was for the common people and will help in the state�s progress.
