GUWAHATI, Nov 5 � The deplorable condition of several city bus stops has laid bare the authorities� utter neglect to public convenience and safety.
The immediate surroundings of the city bus stop at Chandmari Colony are filled with stink and filth, not to mention the thick layer of slush that stays there for a prolonged period after every burst of showers. There is a GMC dustbin very close to the bus stop that remains perennially overflowed with stinking garbage.
�The authorities including the Government and the administration talks a lot about beautifying the city. If this is the status of a busy bus stop in the heart of the city, so much for their beautification talks. Let the authorities get the basics right first,� Rajiv Sharma, a citizen, said.
No less deplorable is the situation at the Guwahati Club bus stop near the TC Girls� School. The stretch of the road along the bus stop is full of potholes, causing the area to remain waterlogged. Commuters have a tough time in negotiating the water and get into a bus, as the bad stretch falls right in front of the bus stop.
�This has been the condition of this bus stop for months together. How could the authorities entrusted with the upkeep of the civic amenities be blind to such a situation? This is not just causing a great deal of inconvenience to the commuters, but also poses a danger to their physical well-being. There have been occasions when people slipped while trying to get into a bus,� another citizen said.
