Demonstration against attacks on journalists

GUWAHATI, April 29 - The All Assam Journalists� Union (AAJU) today staged a sit-in-demonstration in front of the Guwahati Press Club against the recent series of attacks on journalists across the State.

A large number of journalists from different parts of the State took part in the demonstration and demanded strict action against the culprits involved with the incidents. The demonstrators also demanded an Act for security of journalists of the country.

Addressing the gathering, senior journalist Haidor Hussain said the recent attacks on journalists of Assam were an attempt at blocking the activities of the intellectual society.

Executive Editor of Dainik Asam Munin Bayan said that the series of attacks on journalists have posed a threat to entire journalist fraternity. As such, there is an urgent need to start a united democratic movement where journalists of Assam should come together for the sake of their own security, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, vice president of All Assam Students� Union Bipul Rabha strongly condemned the recent incidents of attacks on journalists and demanded strong and early action against all the culprits involved.

Senior journalists Prasanta Rajguru, Partha Pratim Hazarika, Sushanta Talukdar, assistant general secretary of Sadou Asom Sangbad Madhyam Karmachari Sangha Dugdha Kalita and others were also present during the protest demonstration.

Meanwhile, the All Assam Media Workers Union also has demanded of the State government to take stern action against the culprits involved in the recent attacks on journalists across the State.
