GUWAHATI, Oct 24 � The BJP today said that the State was undergoing serious demographic changes due to large-scale illegal migration from Bangladesh which was a direct fallout of the misrule of successive Congress governments.
�The State is being confronted with a serious problem of demographic change stemming from unabated Bangladeshi migration. This is a result of misrule by the Congress, and the time has come for the people put up a united front against this disturbing development,� BJP State president Ranjit Dutta said at a press conference.
Dutta said that the Government was complicating the matter of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC). �Updating the NRC is the only way to save the State from foreign infiltrators but the Congress Government is dithering on the process and complicating the situation. We demand that the Government completes the updating process (not just the pilot projects) in every district before the coming assembly polls,� he said.
Dutta said that corruption had attained an all-time high during the present Congress-led State Government and it was most unfortunate that the Congress was still clinging to power even after Assam was found to be the country�s most corrupt State in the country by a survey.
Dutta said that recent revelations about the Rs 1,000-crore NC Hills scam and recurring cases of corruption in the public distribution system (PDS) left no one in any doubt as to the magnitude of the scourge of corruption patronized by the Government.
The BJP leader was severely critical of the State Government�s role in the matter of mega dams. He said that it was regrettable that the State Government was prepared to sacrifice the interests of the people at the altar of big dams knowing fully well the catastrophic consequences of big dams on the downstream populace. �The State Government has sold its conscience before the big dam lobby comprising capitalists. The BJP will soon launch a mass movement against big dams,� he added.
Coming down heavily on the State Government for failing to address the menace of burgeoning unemployment, Dutta said that the very fact that a whopping 25 lakh registered unemployed youths were in the State was ample proof of the Government�s lack of a holistic policy to tackle the problem.
Dutta said that the BJP�s preparations for the assembly were in full swing, and so far 633 aspiring candidates had submitted their names. �The party�s State election committee will analyze the prospects of the candidates and the final list will be announced by the central leadership in consultation with the State election committee,� he said.
