By Staff Correspondent

DIBRUGARH, Nov 14 A demonstration programme on oil seeds (Toria variety TS-36) was conducted at Panimiri Gaon of Borborooah Block by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra here with the objective of producing good quality oil seeds at the farmers field so that others too can procure and produce high quality oils seeds.

Altogether, 26 hectares in four different locations were selected covering 40 farmers after surveying the village by the experts from both the KVK and Assam Agricultural University.

Another objective of the programme was to popularise Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) practice in oil seed production. Nowadays more emphasis has been given in the use of INM in order to minimise the use of chemical fertilizers, which are harmful to both soil and the human beings, demonstrators from the KVK said. The demonstration programme began on Wednesday and will be over by Saturday.

Toria variety TS-36, which was selected for the demonstration programme, will be cultivated using INM practice in the village. The farmers were trained sequentially in the subject for the purpose. They were provided with all sorts of technical guidance in land selection, field preparation, seed treatment, seed sowing and manure application etc. in different phases sequentially.

It may be pertinent to mention here that bio inputs required for following the INM practice or organic farming are being produced in the laboratory of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Dibrugarh and sold at a nominal rate to help the farmers of the region.

With a view to demonstrate the seed treatment procedure at one location (out of four locations), a few lead farmers from each location were summoned. Dr HK Bhattacharyya, Programme Coordinator of KVK, Dibrugarh, presented a brief description of the programme. Another expert from the District Agriculture Office at Dibrugarh, Bhadrabati Pegu, besides ADO, Barbaruah Circle also attended the programme and addressed the farmers.

Dr M Kachari, SMS, Horticulture, Dr S Baruah, SRF and A Salam, SRF of KVK Dibrugarh demonstrated treatment of seed with bio inputs along with seed sowing to the farmers.
