Demand to construct Udalguri-Tamulpur highway

By Correspondent

UDALGURI, Nov 15 - The Shuklai unit of All Assam Gorkha Students Union (AAGSU), in association with the Dimakuchi Anchalik committee of the organisation and the Dimakuchi Anchalik Hindi Bhashi Students Union, today blocked the proposed Udalguri-Tamulpur State highway for two hours for the alleged delay in the construction of the highway.

The student organisations, which were supported by the public of Dimakuchi area, also burnt the effigies of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and PWD Minister Ajanta Neog. The road was blocked for two hours at Dimakuchi. The Dimakuchi Police later arrested the agitators and released them after two hours.

Santa Sirpali, publicity secretary of the Udalguri district committee of AAGSU, told this correspondent that the proposed Udalguri-Tamulpur State highway, the construction of which was to begin from Rowta Chariali via Harisinga, Panery, Bhutiachang, Dimakuchi and Shuklai in Udalguri district to Tamulpur in Baksa district, is in a dilapidated condition since Independence.

He further said that various organisations moved the Government in this respect on several occasions, but none of the successive governments heeded the public demand. Till date, no government, either in the State or at the Centre, has taken any initiative to construct the road, which is regarded as the lifeline for the people living along the Indo-Bhutan border. If constructed, the highway will boost the rural economy of the remote region, he added.

The AAGSU will raise the issue before the Assembly elections before all parties and send a memorandum to the Centre with a plea to look into the poor road connectivity along the Indo-Bhutan border.
