SILCHAR, May 15 Over 500 cadres of the Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bharatiya Janata Party took to the streets on Wednesday, demanding immediate arrest of the culprits involved in the brutal murder of 20-year-old Babul Goala recently.
Staging an hour-long road blockade at the Ambikapatty-Hospital Road tri-junction, the protesters also demanded adequate security for the family members of Babul as they have been facing threats from unknown individuals. The protesters pressed for a magisterial probe into the incident, besides Rs 10 lakh as compensation from the district administration.
Gautam Chakraborty, district coordinator of the Bajrang Dal, said that though Ainul Haque Barbhuiya, a contractor and the prime accused in the murder, had surrendered, the police were not able to arrest Adul and Md Junaid Mazumder, the two other accused. Incidents like molestation, rape, kidnapping and land grabbing are on the rise. But sadly, the administration and police have remained passive, Chakraborty told Cachar Deputy Commissioner GM Hazarika when a delegation went to submit a memorandum to the latter.
Chakraborty warned of intensifying their agitation if the two other accused are not immediately arrested. Arijit Deb, working president of the district VHP unit, urged the district administration to provide security to the deceaseds sisters, Uma and Rupa Goala, and brother, Ajit Goala. Deb said that despite an assurance from ADC MK Das of a sufficient grant to Babuls bereaved family, only an amount of Rs 5,000 was handed over to them. BJP State spokesperson Audesh Kumar Singh and district president Kaushik Rai said that at least Rs 10,000 should be given to the poor family as compensation and also appealed for allotment of land to the family.
In response to the demands, the Deputy Commissioner pointed out that there is no provision for compensation unless someone is a victim of extremist attack or communal violence. He suggested to the delegation to appeal to the Union Government for financial assistance.
However, the DC said that he would order a magisterial probe into the murder and assured that land would be allotted to the bereaved family.
