Demand raised for NRC updation in Manipur

IMPHAL, Aug 19 - A day-long discourse on �NRC (National Register of Citizens) updation in Manipur: Problems & Prospects� on Sunday recommended for NRC updation to protect the native people in the border State.

It also recommended for the establishment of Manipur State Population Commission in the State to create policy and programme to control inflow of illegal immigrants into the State. It was also decided to submit a memorandum to the Centre and State Government in this regard following a thorough discussion organised by Ethno Heritage Council (Hericoun), a civil society organisation here on Sunday.

The panel discussion was attended by representatives of various civil society organisations, students� bodies, intellectuals, women leaders and others.

Earlier, speaking on �Exigency of NRC updation in Manipur�, Prof RK Narendra of Bio-Statistics, RIMS Imphal expressed the need to have constitutional protection to protect the interest of the native people of Manipur. He said the State needs a population policy apart from instituting a State Population Commission.

Commenting on �NRC in Assam and its implications from Manipur perspective,� Manipur University Faculty member Dr Chinglen Meisnam expressed the need to establish a study centre on migration in the region. �Otherwise we will continue to face more challenges in controlling illegal migration in the region.�

Participating as a resource person on �Impact of migration to the existence of the native people', former social activist turned farmer Artax A Shimray expressed the need to revamp the present system to protect the interest of the native people.
