Demand for construction of rail crossing

By ANN Service

BAIHATA CHARIALI, Dec 2 - Under the aegis of the Deuduar-Tuhura Railgate Demand Committee, a public meeting was held recently at the Deuduar Bidyamandir premises in the presence of the MLA of Kamalpur LAC Satyabrat Kalita, the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup (R) Kamal Kumar Baishya, Circle officer of the Kamalpur Revenue Circle Dr Bedanga Talukdar and officials of the Rangiya rail division.

In the meeting held under the chairmanship of Phule-swar Dhing, retired Principal of Pub- Kamrup College and president of the Rail Gate Demand Committee, a number of speakers spoke about the need of a manned railway crossing at the path way of Deuduar -Tuhura between Changsari and Baihata Railway Station in the greater interest of the public there, since in the last few years, a number of accidents have taken place there.

It is to be mentioned here that a few years back Maijan Bibi (65) and Abdul Hannan Dewan (40) of Piyalikhata village of Kamrup district, were crushed to death after the Maruti car they were travelling in collided with the UP Northeast Express while passing through the path way. The incident took place when Hannan was crossing the tracks and their car broke down. His wife and two children got down and crossed the gate safely but as Hannan was trying to help his elderly mother come out of the car, the train hit the car and the duo died on the spot. After that incident, though the Railgate Demand Committee observed a public meeting in presence of higher officials from the Rangiya rail division, but no fruitful step was initiated by the NF Railways and they said that the pathway (crossing) was unauthorised. After threadbare discussions, the Committee urged the NFR to identify the pathway as an authorised railway crossing repealing their earlier identification and also to initiate other departmental procedures for the construction of a manned railway crossing there to check similar fatal accidents from occurring in the future.
