Delay in starting passenger train service

By Correspondent

SILCHAR, Sept 24 - Even after the passage of five months of completion of the gauge conversion project between Lumding and Silchar, the delay in starting passenger train service has caused annoyance among the local people here.

Expressing disappointment over the promises made by the Government and the Railway department that passenger train service would begin at the earliest and that a number of trains would run on the route, the Silchar-Lumding Broad Gauge Rupayan Sangram Committee has called for a protest programme on October 1 against the delay in starting passenger train service on the newly-laid broad gauge track.

Speaking to media persons here on Wednesday, Ajoy Roy, convener of the committee, said that the tall claims made the Railway authorities to start passenger train service from April this year have proved hollow. He added that the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) report must be made public so that the people could know the reason for the delay.

Arunangshu Bhattacharjee, convener of the Karimganj unit of the committee, said, The committee will send a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 1, urging him to look into the matter and initiate a probe into the activities of the NF Railways and other wings engaged in the gauge conversion project. The committee members will also gherao the office of the Railway Area Manager at Badarpur on October 14.
