Deka conferred literary award

GUWAHATI, Dec 17 � Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi handed over the Padmabhusan Benudhar Sarma Literary Award, 2011 to Agriculture Minister Nilamani Sen Deka at a function held at Rabindra Bhawan this evening.

The award instituted by Socio-cultural organisation Abhinaya was given to Deka for his contributions in areas of historic research and literature.

The award carries Rs 50,000 cash, a citation and a souvenir.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said that the roots of Assamese society are very deep and although apprehensions are expressed by various circles on the

possibility of its extinction from time to time, there is no real reason to fear.

"Assam has a rich history which will always have a bearing on its future. The State's future is bright," Gogoi said, adding, "The path shown by the likes of Sankardev and other great sons of the soil will continue to help in shaping the greater Assamese society.

Receiving the award, Deka said that he would continue to work in the field and contribute towards the well being of the State in some way or the other.

Tripura Minister Anil Sarkar was also present on the occasion.
