NEW DELHI, July 9 Production of tea in Assam and West Bengal has declined in the April-May period by 30.72 million kg, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Nirmala Sitharaman said in a Rajya Sabha reply.
Tea production during the months of April and May declined by 30.72 million kilograms compared to the production during the corresponding period in 2013. However, production during January-March 2014 had gone up by 8.37 million kg compared to the corresponding period in 2013.
Most of the tea growing regions received good rainfall during June, thereby increasing the prospects of making good the shortfall during the ensuing peak cropping months.
The Government is committed to providing support to the Tea Board through adequate financial outlays for carrying out its mandated functions.
