IMPHAL, Feb 14 Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Manipur unit has urged to declare the proxy votes detected in the recent Assembly polls in Manipur as invalid. The Nationalist Congress Party has also made a similar demand.

Vice President of BJP Manipur unit speaking to reporters said that re-poll will not solve the problem as it is a well organised willful violation of election norms. The Election Commission India (ECI) has been urged to count the actual votes found in the cross checking and declare the proxy votes as invalid, he added.

BJP Manipur units stand came a day after the detection of the irregularities including proxy voting during a two-day scrutiny of 177 polling stations of 13 Assembly Constituencies in Manipur.

The scrutiny continued till Monday afternoon in presence of ECIs three observers, concerned candidates and their agents.

With a view to check proxy voting, photographs of voters were taken on the polling day on January 28 and the subsequent re-poll at 34 polling stations on February 4 for the first time in the electoral history of India.

Manipur Tourism Minister TN Haokip and Rural Development Minister Md Allauddin who are seeking re-election on Congress tickets said that re-poll should be initiated in the polling stations where irregularities were detected.
