Deborah chargesheeted, to appear before court

By Correspondent

SHILLONG, Nov 11 Meghalaya Social Welfare Minister Deborah Ch Marak would be appearing before a local court in Williamnagar, East Garo Hills on Friday after she was chargesheeted for allegedly having links with a terrorist outfit.

The minister said that she is going to appear before the court and prove her innocence. The court has earlier issued summon to appear before it after the Meghalaya Police submitted the chargesheet. However, Marak said that she still cant understand why she was chargesheeted after more than a year, when the case was filed on February 16, 2013.

Marak was chargesheeted on November 3 by Meghalaya Police along with former Williamnagar Block Youth Congress president Tennydard Marak for allegedly having links with the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), a terrorist outfit, in order to win the Assembly elections.

It is still not clear whether Tennydard would be appearing before the court. Tennydard has earlier filed a petition before the Supreme Court challenging Chief Minister Mukul Sangmas ST status. Moreover, Tennydard has also been one of the Congress legislators demanding change of leadership.

However, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma recently said that the chargesheet has nothing to do with the internal bickering within the Congress party.

Meghalaya Police have already informed the Assembly Speaker AT Mondal about the case and has said that if required it would seek his permission of the arrest of the minister as is required.
