Debashish clinches title

GUWAHATI, Sept 7 - International fide rating player and reigning North East champion Debashish Dutta added another feather to his cap by winning the 25th edition of PC Borooah First Sunday Chess Tournament, organised by the PC Borooah Chess Academy yesterday at its Academy campus, Chandmari here. Debashish scored 6.5 points from 7 rounds and remain unbeaten throughout the tournament.

On his way to title Debasish Dutta beat Baibhabi Baruah in the first round and Rishabh Singh in the second round. In the third round Debasish beat Asian U-8 runners up Shahil Dey, who is participating in this tournament as a final warm-up tournament before his World Youth Chess Championships 2015 to be held in Greece from October 24 to November 6. In the fourth round Debasish beat Uddipta Gogoi and in the fifth round he beat Prachurjya Gayan. In the 6th round he beat Amlan Mahanta and taken sole lead. But in the final round he was held to draw by Khanindra Barman but already clinched title by virtue of half point lead over the field.

Youngster Uddipta Kakati scored 6 points from same number of rounds and got second position. In U-7 category, Biwaswan Chowdhury claimed the title by scoring 3 points. Priyangshu Goswami and Baibhabi Baruah also scored 3 points each but declared third and second on the basis of tie-break score. In U-9 category, Pran Gobinda Parashar Kashyap claimed the title with 5 points while in the U-11 category Rishabh Singh won the title scoring 4.5. Altogether 67 players, including 25 rated players participated in the tournament. The tournament was held in Swiss League system for 7 rounds.
