GUWAHATI, Sept 15 - A Special Court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) here today awarded death penalty to two hardcore militants of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Songbijit), while sentencing two other members to life imprisonment in connection with the case related to the mass killing in Sonitpur district in 2014.

This is the first case of the NIA court sentencing members of any proscribed organisation to death penalty in the Northeast. The court had convicted the four NDFB(S) militants on August 29 and the quantum of punishment was pronounced today.

The court pronounced death sentence for Ajoy Basumatary and Bishnu Narzary under sections 302 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), besides other relevant sections of the Arms Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The other two accused Sanju Bordoloi and Nitul Daimary were sentenced to life imprisonment under various sections under the IPC, Arms Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

The sentences will run concurrently for all the accused.
