NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Jan 14 The Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner, Dr. Anwaruddin Chawdhury today took strong exception to media reports of police firing on anti-dam protesters in his district on yesterday evening.

Reacting to the reports of police firing at Thekeraguri under Bogeenadi Police Station in Lakhimpur, as published in some dailies, the DC said that the police had only fired teargas shells at the protesters who were blocking the National Highway 52 while trying to halt vehicles carrying fuel to the NHPCs dam site at Gerukamukh by laying tree logs and boulders on the road.

The anti-dam protesters turned furious following the arrest of 30 of their comrades by Bogeenadi police. But they were released soon after following the discussion by the Lakhimpur district authority with the agitators.

It may be recalled that the anti-dam protesters led by KMSS, TMPK, AJYCP and AAMSU have been keeping a vigil on transportation of fuel and other construction materials to the dam site at Ghagar Nagar on NH-52 in Lakhimpur district up to Gogamukh in Dhemaji district, a stretch of 40 km, braving chilling cold.

As the anti-dam protesters have been busy in mobilizing the public against the dam, other student and youth organisations like the NSUI, Youth Congress, Asom Yuva Parichad, ABVP, BYJM, AISF and SFI have not been found to be engaged in any activities concerning the dam at Gerukamukh among the public.
