NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Nov 22 - �The newspapers published from the Tribune group have been playing a pioneering role in shaping the modern sensibility and nationhood of Assamese people�. This is what noted social worker and prominent citizen Saifuddin Ali Hazarika told to the gathering in North Lakhimpur to mark the golden jubilee celebration here while chairing the meeting.
He said that while the present day media in Assam, particularly the electronic one has been very insensitive towards people�s sensibilities and careless about the use of language, the newspapers from the Tribune group have been very decent, to the point and carry a sense of responsibility for the society. The golden jubilee function of Dainik Asam in North Lakhimpur began with the lighting of the lamp before the portrait of Radha Govinda Baruah, founder of the Tribune group by Saifuddin Ali Hazarika. This was followed by the garlanding of the portrait by noted poet Jogen Taid. The objective of the meeting was explained by Munin Bayan, executive editor of Dainik Asam.
Former correspondent of Dainik Asam from Narayanpur and subject teacher of Narayanpur HS School, Chandra Hazarika delivered the lecture as an appointed speaker. Hazarika said that journalist should follow the ethics espoused by Joseph Pulitzer. He recollected the historic role played by RG Baruah in setting up an exemplary media house in Assam. He also delivered a chronological account of journalism in Assam from Aroonudoi onwards.
Noted innovator and scientist Uddhav Bharali and poet Jogen Taid attended the function as special guests. The executive editor of Dainik Asam Munin Bayan, circulation manager of the Tribune group Sayed Jainal Abedin, president of the Assam Tribune Employee�s Union Shiva Prasad Deka, development officer Pranab Dutta Goswami also attended the function.
Veteran journalists from Lakhimpur district Chandreswar Duwarah, Harnul Rashid, Abu Sayed Khan and sports journalist Jatin Saikia were felicitated by the Tribune group on the occasion. The president of North Lakhimpur Press Club Surajeet Bhuyan and scribe Sailen Baruah were also felicitated. Newspaper agent Ratan Saha from North Lakhimpur and Anil Saha from Laluk were also felicitated on the occasion.
