AZARA, May 9 � A gang of dacoits who were fleeing in a Maruti van along with an ATM locker fired at policemen at Jalukbari in the wee hours today, injuring a police constable in the process.
One of the dacoits, identified as Safiqul from Rangiya � who fired the shot at police constable Ainul Haque � was apprehended while the rest managed to flee.
Police said the gang broke open an ATM machine of Bijoya Bank at Azara and were making good their escape when they were intercepted by a police patrol party at the check gate at Jalukbari. On being confronted, one of the dacoits shot at the police party with a 7.65 mm pistol. The locker was found to contain an amount of Rs 9,49,500.
The injured constable is undergoing treatment at the GMCH. GMCH sources said that he was in a serious condition and had undergone a major surgery today. A 7.65 mm pistol and two live cartridges were seized from the spot.
