Cyber criminals active in city, targeting ATM users

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, June 15 The City Police is on the lookout for a gang of cyber criminals who had allegedly targeted a number of bank accounts of ATM users.

The group has reportedly indulged in a number of hacking cases, thereby siphoning off a sizeable amount of money (online shopping) from different bank accounts of individuals.

These cyber criminals had even cracked the passwords of a number of users and resorted to online shopping against the accounts. Such is their expertise that even the SIM card of the original customer is blocked by them so that no SMS on transaction or withdrawal is received by the account holder in his cell phone, sources said.

While a couple of the members of the gang have been arrested, police said more arrests could follow. The gang, police said, comprises professional hackers. The CID and the Crime Branch of City Police are on the lookout for the offenders.

Investigators have asked ATM users not to make anybody privy to their account number or confidential PIN code, which could cost them heavily.

Police is also going to hold a meeting with the bank officials soon as involvement of some bank officials is also suspected.

There are national and international cyber crime rackets on the prowl, looking for an easy prey. There have been a number of such cases in the recent past, a CID official said.
