GUWAHATI, Dec 14 - Curfew was relaxed in Guwahati for the first time after it was clamped on December 11 even as the State machinery today extended the timeline for resumption of Internet services in the State by another 48 hours.

The relaxation in curfew was ordered by the administration in Guwahati for seven hours from 9 am till 4 pm, while the suspension of Internet has been further extended till 7 pm on Monday, official sources told The Assam Tribune.

In Dibrugarh too, the curfew was relaxed from 8 am to 2 pm.

Meanwhile, no major incident of violence was reported in Guwahati since the last 24 hours although inputs about police resorting to lathi-charge at various areas are pouring in.

The Army and security forces continued with their patrolling routine.

The sources informed that the decision to extend the suspension of Internet services was taken in view of the existing law-and-order situation.

The sources also informed that they are continuously reviewing the situation in the State and also keeping a tab on the scenario in the neighbouring States.

Under the existing situation, security forces cannot lower their guard. We want to ensure that the anti-social elements do not take advantage of the situation, the sources added.
