GUWAHATI, Sept 10 - The Kamrup Natya Samiti has come up with a yearlong calendar of plays to be staged in the Kumar Bhaskar Natya Mandir in its bid to ameliorate the Assamese drama and reconnect it with the culture of the State.
The Samiti, a non-profit body, however, has urged the people of the State to come forward for supporting quality theatre presentation in the city.
The Kamrup Natya Samiti is housed in the Kumar Bhaskar Natya Mandir, the oldest theatre hall in Guwahati, constructed way back in 1912.
The plans to kick start the yearlong cultural activities have been revised in view of the devastating floods in the State. Instead of September 17 and 18, the theatre activities would be launched in the Kumar Bhaskar Natya Mandir from October 13.
�Three shows of Swasthyasri, a satire by eminent dramatist Mahendra Borthakur, will be staged on October 13 and 14,� Natya Samiti president Dhiren Baruah said.
During its century-long existence, the Samiti has undergone several changes. Recently, it was renovated with the help of community contribution and also with the financial support of the Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Guwahati Refinery. At present, the Samiti is primarily managed by the subscription of its members.
�The legacy of Assamese drama and culture can be showcased by staging both epic and modern dramatic creations. Keeping this in view, we have decided to stage dramas at regular intervals. However, to sustain such activities, especially during the initial phase, we need a corpus fund,� Baruah added.
The Samiti will stage Mrinal Mahi in February 2018, commemorating the birth anniversary of Satyaprasad Barua.
