By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 10 - The Panbazar police have registered a case in connection with the reported drowning of a seven-year-old girl, Manashi Kakoti, while undergoing swimming training at the Gauhati Town Club (GTC) pool on Friday afternoon.

The case has been registered under Section 304 of Indian Penal Code culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Police said there were two coaches present at the time of the incident and both were called for questioning. We have obtained the CCTV footage and examining it, they said. It appeared from the footage that the girl was reluctant to go into the pool.

The coach was near her. But, as he diverted his attention to elsewhere, the incident took place. It happened within a minute or even less, sources said. Around 20 trainees were undergoing training at the time of the incident at the pool.

The family of the girl, in their FIR, alleged negligence on the part of the coaches. The girls mother was present near the pool at the time of the incident, which took place around 4 pm. The drowned girl was taken to a hospital where she was declared brought dead.

The GTC swimming pool is located on the rooftop. Its maximum depth is 5 feet, but officials at the club said the incident took place at a spot where the depth is just 2.5 feet.
