CRPF man killed in Manipur

IMPHAL, Oct 21 - A CRPF personnel was killed while another sustained serious injuries when a hand grenade exploded inside a mini truck here, reports said on Sunday.

The incident took place when a CRPF truck was passing through Phougeisangbam Leikai area of the busy Nagamapal Road here around 6 pm on Saturday, police sources said. The CRPF personnel was reported killed on the spot while his colleague was admitted to RIMS hospital here for treatment.

The deceased personnel has been identified as Constable Umesh M Helavar of 143 battalion CRPF and a resident of Karnataka while the injured was Constable N Ramaranjan of 109 battalion CRPF and a resident of Tamil Nadu.

It was not known immediately how the grenade exploded. Some claimed it was hurled by unidentified persons. Police are investigating the incident. No armed group in the State has claimed responsibility for the incident so far.

Manipur DGP LM Khaute and top State police and CRPF officers visited the spot and the injured personnel at RIMS hospital. Chief Minister N Biren Singh has condemned the incident. He said the culprits would be nabbed soon.
