Critical cases treated in city hospital

By The Assam Tribune

GUWAHATI, May 18 - Two intractable cases of massive bleeding with coughing (in a 28-year-old patient and a 58-year-old patient) were treated successfully by interventional radiologist Dr Arup Karmakar of Swagat Hospital by angioembolisation at Dispur Hospital here, said a delayed press release.

Dr Karmakars help was sought by Dr Abhishek Agarwal, pulmonologist at Dispur Hospital as the excessive bleeding in both the patients could not be controlled through extensive conservative medical treatment, the press release claimed.

The advantages of angioembolisation are: reduced risks, shorter hospital stay, lower costs, greater comfort, quicker recovery and early return to work. It is an image-guided minimally invasive pinhole surgery done with a single needle prick without any cuts, sutures or scars. Interventional radiology (IR) is final and curable treatment in selective cases. When nothing works, IR does.

IR can prevent bleeding in some types of surgery, e.g. during caesarean section in patients with a high risk of bleeding from an abnormal placenta (post partum haemorrhage). It can treat blood clots in the lung (pulmonary embolism), dilated veins (varicose veins) that most commonly occur in the legs, venous thrombosis, etc. IR can also be used to treat expanded arteries (aneurysms) at risk of rupture and bleeding by relining the vessel with a tube called a stent graft, the release further claimed.
