Criminal who fled from police custody held

MANGALDAI, April 10 - Hatem Ali (28), the absconding criminal suspected to be a poacher who managed to escape from the clutches of the police at the Mangaldai Civil Hospital in the wee hours of April 3 last, has been rearrested by Darrang Police on April 8 last from his hideout in Roumari Char under Shyampur PS of the district.

He has been remanded to judicial custody by the court. It may be recalled here that acting on a tip off of a possible financial deal of a rhino horn, Darrang Police on April 2 night had laid a trap engaging police in civvies in the guise of buyers. They made a deal with the poachers� racket at village Silbori adjacent to Orang National Park and Tiger Reserve under Dalgaon PS.

However, the gang of poachers, convinced that the policemen were traders and with the intention of looting them, attacked the team causing injuries to three policemen.

The additional police team immediately retaliated and nabbed one of the gang members, namely, Hatem Ali (28). Ali was later brought to Mangaldai Civil Hospital and was admitted in the male surgical ward from where he escaped in the wee hours.
