Create women�s body to protect trees: Dr Heptulla

IMPHAL, June 28 - Manipur Governor Dr Najma Heptulla has appealed to the public to create a women�s group for the protection and care of trees. She was addressing the closing function of the first phase of the �Governor�s Initiative for Green Manipur� campaign here today.

Dr Heptulla appealed to the people to plants trees during important events in families like child birth and marriage. �If every individual plants a tree annually, we will have an additional 28 lakh trees in Manipur every year,� she said.

Urging media persons and the youth to play a key role in conserving trees and creating awareness in this regard, the Governor said that every effort should be made to preserve the biodiversity for posterity.

Forest and Environment Minister Th Shyamkumar Singh, who was also present in the function, also made a clarion call for protection and care of trees to fight climate change.

The closing function was attended by Wangkhei MLA O Henry, Brigadier Amit Kabthiyal of 9 Sector of the Assam Rifles, and the presidents of Eastern Students� Club, Citizens� Club, Wal United Club and GPS.

The Citizens� Club, Chapram Leirak Development Committee, Wal United Club and Nongmeibung Women Development Meira Paibi Association received awards for their activities, while Eastern Students� Club, Nongmeibung, was given the best organiser award.
