DOOMDOOMA, April 6 - People of Assam were never communal, nor are they communal now, or will be so in future, observed former MLA and state secretariat member of CPM Hemen Das.
Addressing an election rally for the party candidate of Lakhimpur HPC Amiya Kumar Handique at Kakopothar in Tinsukia district on Friday, the veteran Marxist leader exhorted people to defeat the communal BJP in view of their current activities of destroying the very fabric of Assamese society by trying to divide the people on communal lines.
Criticising the saffron party, Das said that in the living memory of the people, no other political party had deceived the people or told lies the way they do in India since Independence. The BJP which boasts of patriotism, did not hesitate to sell the assets of the country to big capitalist groups. So, the people who are concerned for the welfare of the country should straightway reject BJP in the ensuing Lok Sabha polls, he added.
Addressing the rally, CITU secretary Tapan Sharma said that the state government which failed to make arrear payment to the workers of the two paper mills had no right to seek vote from the people of the state. Referring to the state governments move to deposit Rs 5000/- in the bank accounts of the tea labourers, Sharma revealed that the state government had given a waiver of Rs 78,000 per labourer to the tea company management instead of compelling them to pay wage @ Rs 351 per day.
Both the Leftist leaders have been participating in the party election rallies at Chabua, Doomdooma and Sadiya LACs under Lakhimpur HPC for the last couple of days.
