By Correspondent

DIPHU, Feb 21 The CPI (ML), hills party committee, and Karbi Students Association, along with other bodies like the KNCA, AISA, RYA, KSKA, KANKIS, AIPWA and AICCTU, staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioners office here on Thursday, demanding immediate implementation of Article 244(A).

It may be mentioned here that as the Bill for the Telangana State has been passed in the Parliament, the agitation for an autonomous State of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao is gaining momentum.

While demanding the creation of an autonomous State for the people of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao, the CPI (ML), hills party committee, along with its allied parties, staged a sit-in demonstration, demanding an autonomous State, and criticised the Congress-led UPA Government and the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party.

Talking to media persons, Rabi Kumar Phangcho, secretary, CPI (ML), hills party committee, said, We support and welcome the creation of Telangana State. The long-standing fight of its people is all about to come to an end, but the Constitutional right of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao has not been heeded at all.

The Congress-led UPA and State governments have been depriving the people of the hill districts in Assam from attaining autonomous States since many decades. People of the hill districts have only been demanding self-rule for safeguarding their interests and the development of the places, Phangcho added.

He said that the autonomous State issue is a genuine issue and it is attainable under the provisions of Article 244(A) of the Indian Constitution. Despite the long-standing demand and Constitutional rights of the hill people, the demand has been diluted. We demand immediate creation of autonomous States for the people of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao by implementing Article 244(A), the CPI (ML) leader said.

In the sit-in protest, Laichan Engleng, president, KSA, Protima Enghipi, general secretary, KNCA, Pradip Engleng, president, RYA, Amlong Engti, general secretary, KANKIS, Ranjit Kramsa, president, AISA, Sira Beypi, president, AIPWA, Semson Killing, president, AICCTU, and Kaleng Englengpi, KSKA, also spoke on the demand for autonomous States for Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao.
