By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 18 - The BJP-led government has brought various false charges against those protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in order to muffle the democratic mass movement, alleged the Assam State Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) here today.

Slamming the government over the arrest of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti leader Akhil Gogoi, the CPI(M) said in a statement that it is a reflection of the revengeful character of the government.

The police also arrested CPI (M) leader from Sonitpur Lila Bhuyan, CPI leader from Dibrugarh Diganta Phukan and RCPI leader Kushal Chetia. In the same way, hundreds of members of different parties and organisations have been arrested by the police under non-bailable sections of different acts. This has proved the fascists characteristics of the present government, the statement, issued by secretary of CPI (M) Assam State Committee Deben Bhattacharya, said.

The party urged all sections of people not to believe in the communal messages spread by the government to stop the mass movement.

Provincial Bank employees plea: The Assam Provincial Bank Employees Association (APBEA) today urged the government to exempt Assam and the Northeastern region from the purview of the CAA. In a statement issued today it also expressed grave concern over the prevailing situation in the State and mourned the death of five persons during the protests. It also appealed to all sections of people to maintain peace and harmony and to remain alert against the divisive forces.
