Court rejects police custody for Chetia

GUWAHATI, Dec 5 - The Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup, rejected the custody of ULFA leader Anup Chetia as sought by the Special Operation Unit

(SOU) of the Assam Police today.

The custody was sought in connection with the SOU police station case (No. 1/95) with several sections of the IPC and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act

attributed to it.

As the case in question is already charge-sheeted, the custody of Chetia, who was represented by advocate Bijon Kumar Mahajan, cannot be granted, the court

ruled.

Anup Chetia was today produced before the CBI Court, Guwahati, in connection with the case in which he was arrested after being extradited from Bangladesh as

part of the regular remand procedure under the Code of Criminal Procedure.

In the said case, the bail application has already been filed and December 7 has been fixed for case diary and response from the Central Government�s side.

Meanwhile, as the case can be tried in a Sessions court, the prayer for Chetia�s bail was also rejected by the Court of the CJM, Kamrup.

Chetia will be produced before the court again on December 19 and copies will be served to him so that the case can be committed to the Court of Sessions

Judge, Kamrup (Metro), on the said date.
