Court records statement of Sonapur molestation victim

By Correspondent

JORABAT, Sept 28 - The Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) today recorded a statement in a molestation case, in which Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Arshad Ali of Sonapur Police Station has received severe criticism for his unethical role in dealing with it. It may be recalled that on September 26 hundreds of AASU workers along with members of womens organisations of Dimoria laid siege to the Sonapur Police Station after coming to know that ASI Ali had demanded Rs 10,000 for writing an FIR on behalf of the nineteen-year-old victim of molestation and misbehaving with the victims family for the money. However, Abdul Hye, in-charge of the police station later returned Rs 6,000 on humanitarian ground and to uphold the self-respect of the police, without accepting the charges against Ali.

ASI Ali was also charged with replacing the original FIR with another FIR citing bailable offence, presumably to allow the accused Tarini Paul to get bail from the police station itself. Later that day an internal inquiry conducted by a senior officer found Ali involved in gross misconduct in his duties and he was placed under suspension with immediate effect.

Meanwhile, today the court recorded the victims statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), police sources confirmed.

Police sources further informed that, based on the statement provided by the victim in the court today, other sections would be added to the case if needed. Subsequently, the accused Paul will be arrested if the case falls under a non-bailable section after the new sections are added to it.

On the other hand, the Sonapur Traffic Outpost in-charge, who was also accused of some unethical practices by the AASU protesters during the September 26 protest in the presence of DCP East Gautam Bora, was today transferred.

It may be mentioned that officers serving at the Sonapur PS have received a massive backlash as they are allegedly involved in unethical practices and making money by various illegal means.
