The court has imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 and Rs 500 on Sri Sri Dakshinpat Ashromi Satradhikar Janardan Devagoswami after finding his involvement in the incident that took place on October 15, 2018.

It may be mentioned here that Prasanta Payeng, a villager of Phulani area of Majuli, had filed two cases in court against the satradhikar alleging that a group of persons led by Devagoswami had attacked a church constructed by Payeng.

The lawyer representing Payeng told newspersons that the court, after examining a number of witnesses, found Devagoswamis involvement in the incident and convicted him under Section 295 of the IPC (injuring or defiling a place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class) and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000.

In the second case, the court convicted Devagoswami under Section 447 of the IPC (criminal trespass) and imposed a fine of Rs 500, the lawyer stated.

Devagoswami, who was present in the court on the day of pronouncement of judgement, said he will appeal against the judgement in the High Court.

Leaders of several organisations were present along with the satradhikar and they expressed solidarity with Devagoswami.
