Court directs civic body to clear pension

By Correspondent

IMPHAL, Sept 20 - Imphal Municipal Council (IMC) is yet to clear pension for 239 pensioners, including arrear of 236 pensioners for 141 months in spite of a severe order passed by the Chief Justice of High Court of Manipur to pay the pension regularly, including the arrears.

In a fresh order passed by the Chief Justice LK Mohapatra on August 26 this year, the Court has directed to halt the payments of salary/honorarium for chairperson, councillors, including Class I officers to utilise the money for paying the money to pensioners. This was conveyed by the IMC Pensioners Association general secretary L Tomba at a press meet here on Saturday.

Instead of clearing their pension, the Association member said some unidentified miscreants dismantled their rest-shed-cum-office inside the IMC premises on September 5 night, allegedly reacting to the litigation that led to halt of honorarium/salary for councillors and chairperson.

The pensioners said they strongly condemned the act as it is a gross disrespect to the senior citizens. The Association further blamed the MAHUD Minister and IMC authorities for the pension and arrears remaining uncleared.

The Association further said that on April 8 this year, the Court had also directed the IMC to sell their assets to clear the unpaid pension for the said 236 pensioners and the latest direction to halt the honorarium/salaries came after MAHUD and IMC failed to implement the Court direction.
