NORTH LAKHIMPUR, April 18 - A middle-aged couple was tortured by a mob at Dhakuakhana in Lakhimpur district recently.
The incident took place at Belunpora village of Dimoruguri Gaon Panchayat under Dhakuakhana Police Station on Tuesday night when a group of villagers armed with sticks and sharp weapons surrounded the house of Brajen Doley alias Dharmendra and his wife Durgeswari Doley and dragged them out from their beds. The mob accused them of practicing witchcraft in the village and forcibly took them to an isolated area named Khomen Jaan.
The couple were subsequently buried upto their necks on the ground and tortured with kicks and slaps on their faces. After that, the mob dragged the couple back to the village for further punishment in the wee hours.
Meanwhile, police arrived on the spot and rescued the tormented couple from the mob. They were admitted to hospital for treatment.
Another tortured woman named Amiya Doley was also rescued by the police in that same operation. The victims have in the meantime lodged FIR at Dhakuakhana Police Station against 16 persons of the village. The couple alleged that all the 16 accused attacked them over a personal matter.
