Couple, minor son die in road mishap

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Jan 28 Three members of a family died in a road accident when the motorcycle they were riding in came under the wheels of a speeding truck at Narengi Tiniali this afternoon, police said

The dead include Birendranath Sarma (45), his wife (36) and their son aged around 12 years. While Sarma and his son were declared brought dead at the GMCH, his wife died soon after reaching the hospital, a GMCH source said. The family hailed from Basistha area.

Following the accident, angry public blocked the road, bringing vehicular traffic to a standstill for hours. Most of the people alleged that commercial vehicles such as trucks, buses, trekkers, etc., were habituated to reckless driving for want of any enforcement of traffic and road-safety norms by police, especially its traffic wing, and the Transport department.

It is appalling how commercial and also to some extent private vehicles operate on the road. This road has been witnessing a number of accidents, including many fatal ones, every year. Regrettably, the police chooses not to enforce the relevant laws which is a direct cause in the spurt in road mishaps. There is absolute chaos on the city roads, a local resident said.

However, the administration was swift in deploying a huge contingent of police and CRPF personnel at the spot, some even in riot gear, to prevent the situation from deteriorating. Barricades were erected to prevent the public from moving to the sidewalk to the main road.

But there was heavy traffic jam in the VIP all the way from Narengi Tiniali to Six Mile after vehicular movement was halted for over one hour at one of the lanes for over an hour. Normal traffic resumed around 6.30 pm.
