GUWAHATI, Jan 9 - The student fraternity of Cotton University today began an indefinite hunger strike in protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in front of the main gate of the institution this morning, along with their indefinite class boycott announced yesterday.
Pranjal Kalita, general secretary of the Cotton University Students� Union (CUSU) said the hunger strike will continue until the government comes up with a proper answer to the issues related to the controversial legislation that was passed in Lok Sabha yesterday.
The CUSU also held a meeting with the student unions of various colleges today to chalk out a plan for launching a united student movement against the Bill.
According to Kalita, representatives of around 12 colleges of the State attended the meeting. The colleges are Pandu College, Pragjyotish College, Guwahati College, Gauhati Commerce College, Dispur College, Handique Girls� College, Dakshin Kamrup College and Pub Kamrup College.
�Due to various reasons, many colleges could not attend today�s meeting. So, we will again sit down tomorrow to discuss the issue with these colleges. We will not stop until the Central government scraps the Bill,� Kalita said.
Meanwhile, the Post-graduate Students� Union (PGSU) of Gauhati University, in protest against the Bill, has restricted holding of all kinds of government programmes henceforth in the premises of the university.
In a statement, the PGSU said it would carry out a massive protest if the government tries to hold any programme in the presence of any member from the ruling party.
PGSU general secretary Nayan Jyoti Gogoi said, �Tomorrow, we will have a meeting with the students of all colleges under GU and start a protest from Friday onwards.�
The Students� Federation of India (SFI) State committee also organised a protest march in the city on the issue.
The artiste fraternity of the State also carried out a torchlight procession against the Bill here this evening and urged all sections of society to come out to join the movement.
Meanwhile, the Junior Doctors� Association of the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital today announced that all junior doctors of the hospital will wear black badges during duty hours tomorrow as a mark of protest against the Citizenship Bill.
