Corruption harming education system: Dr Dutta

JORHAT, Feb 1 � Dr Dilip Kumar Dutta, noted mathematician, a preserver of old Assamese songs and literary works took part in an interactive session with mediapersons here as the �Guest of the month� at Press Club, Jorhat here today.

Answering the question of a scribe, Dr Dutta said that the education system of Assam is suffering from various ailments. Corruption is one of the major causes of it.

He further said that the government of Assam never discusses various aspects of the education system with intellectuals, educationists and experts while preparing a course for the students. But in the USA, the people of a particular region decides what should be the content of a course.

Talking about the �Math Anxiety�, he said that it is a manifestation of the society. In Assam the dunce students of mathematics class often become teachers of mathematics in course of time as the meritorious ones go for other professions.

�Dedication among teachers are now hard to find in Assam. Once colleges like Cotton College and JB College were established for the welfare of the society. But now educational institutes are established for financial gain,�� he added.

Talking about the educational system in the USA, he said that the co-operative learning is the best process. �Sarat Chandra Goswami, the distinguished educationist introduced this method here in the Jorhat Normal School long ago,�� he said.

Dutta during his long 40 years of service remained absent from teaching only for one day due to illness, he said.

Dr Dilip Kumar Dutta was born in Jorhat on April 30, 1937. His father was Late Phanidhar Dutta, first registrar of Gauhati University. He taught mathematics in Southampton University (UK), Kelgarg University (Canada) and Rhod Island University (USA).

Among the books he authored are �Subha Dinar Nirghanta�, �Nilar Surabhi Bhangi�, �Bhupen Hazarikar Geet Aru Jibonor Rath�, �Phali Lowa Buranji� and �Mur Shikshya aru Shikshyak�.

He is also one of the pioneers of digitalizing and preserving old Assamese songs.
