Cop killed in Manipur ambushes

IMPHAL, Sept 9 � A police personnel was killed while two others sustained serious injuries in two separate ambushes carried out by well-armed unidentified gunmen suspected to be Naga militants, in Manipur�s Ukhrul district today.

The first ambush took place when a team of Manipur Police Commandos was returning to Imphal from Ukhrul near Lower Hundung, about 70 km north of Imphal, around 9.50 am, while the second incident occurred when another police team was moving towards Ukhrul, near Thawai village junction about 35 km north of Imphal around 10 am. Both the places are located along the Imphal-Ukhrul route, police sources said.

The police teams had retaliated on both occasions and the fire fight lasted for some time.

Meanwhile, the injured police commando personnel in the first attack was rushed to a hospital at Shangshak in Ukhrul district, while the other two injured persons in the second incident were sent to JNIMS hospital in Imphal, the sources added.

Later, a police officer from Ukhrul district confirmed over phone that the personnel of the first incident, identified as one Thotyo Keishing (29) of Riha village of Ukhrul district, succumbed to his injuries.

One of the injured in the second attack, identified as one Kh Amutombi of Kakching Khunou village of Thoubal district, is said to be in a serious condition, according to sources in Imphal. The other inured was Khupminlian (29) of Tuibuang in Churachandpur.

So far no armed group operating in the State has claimed responsibility for the attack till the filing of this report.

On July 12 this year, Ngalangzar Malue, an Autonomous District Council Member of Ukhrul district was killed while his cousin and driver sustained serious injuries when some unidentified gunmen ambushed them near Finch Corner junction in Ukhrul district.
