TURA, April 3 - David SR Marak, in-charge of Jengjal police outpost under West Garo Hills district, has been placed under suspension for his alleged involvement in the molestation of a minor from Jengjal village on the evening of Easter Monday.
Marak has also been accused of beating up one Taposh Sangma, who was with the victim when they were stopped by the IC and his team on Easter Monday.
Two FIRs were filed last night at Tura PS on the assault and molestation cases.
According to the FIR on the molestation case, Marak had stopped them near Waribokgre, a few kms from Jengjal village at about 7.30 pm when they were on their way to a relatives house in Waribok on a motorcycle. The policemen allegedly charged Taposh with being a Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) worker and also called him a pimp.
I was abused and called a pimp before they started beating me up. I was hit on my arms and legs. I panicked and ran away. All the policemen were in an inebriated state, said Taposh.
The incident came to light only on March 31, after the family of the victim approached NGOs of Jengjal.
Meanwhile, the minor girl was then taken to the PS after the incident, around 8.30 pm in the night. I was taken to the outpost and asked to wait in the chamber of the IC for more than an hour, said the minor. He started acting strange, put off the candle and started molesting me. I was later dropped at my house late that night but I did not have the guts to reveal what happened to my parents, she added.
The minor later drew up the courage and informed her parents who then informed various NGOs of the village.
Policemen need to uphold the law and not break it, said an activist Jaynie Sangma, who paid a visit to the family yesterday.
West Garo Hills SP Mukesh Singh confirmed the suspension of the Jengjal IC. The matter is being investigated, he said.
