Contributions of RG Baruah recalled

GUWAHATI, July 15 � With a call to promote the ideologies of Radha Govinda Baruah among the younger generation, the death anniversary of the Singhapurush was observed today through remembrance of his unmatched contributions towards the uplift of Assam in the fields of journalism, sports and culture.

Considered as the architect of modern Assam, RG Baruah gave the North-East its first sports complex � the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Guwahati and was instrumental in setting up the Assam Flying Club, Assam Rifle Club and opening of the first tea auction centre in Guwahati. He brought Bihu to the stage in a much organised form and was also the first Mayor of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation.

The first branch of the then Imperial Bank (now SBI) was set up in Assam in 1923 in Dibrugarh at his initiative. He was also the founder of The Assam Tribune Group of Publications.

Floral wreaths were placed at the statue of RG Baruah at Dighalipukhuripar, where his admirers fondly remembered his pioneering spirit and relentless efforts towards building a modern Assam. The RG Baruah Smriti Raksha Samity organised the tribute-paying ceremony, which was initiated by Surajit Govinda Baruah, one of the directors of The Assam Tribune Group and grandson of RG Baruah.

Social worker Pradip Kakati strongly advocated the need to take RG Baruah�s ideologies to the midst of the younger generation. �To inspire our younger generation, the school curriculum must include a chapter on the life and works of RG Baruah. This apart, a State-level essay competition should be organised on his life,� he said.

Educationist, Professor Parama Kalita, while speaking on the occasion, said that RG Baruah�s entire life was dedicated to the people of Assam and his work culture still inspired his admirers.

Conducted by Samity general secretary Bhuban Lahkar, the tribute-paying function was attended by people from different walks of life. SP Deka, a noted advocate, recalled RG Baruah�s contributions in the fields of sports and journalism. �Within a limited period of time, he did commendable work in every field, where he ventured,� said Deka. Floral tributes were also offered to RG Baruah at the Assam Tribune building here.

Our Dibrugarh Bureau adds: The death anniversary of Radha Govinda Baruah was observed here today under the auspices of the Dibrugarh RG Baruah Smriti Rakhya Samiti, informed its secretary, Ron Duarah.

A team of citizens, led by the Samiti�s working president Dr Kamini Ranjan Baruah, offered floral tributes to RG Baruah at the Sahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbaroa Udyan here in the morning. Dr Baruah in his brief speech on the occasion, recalled the contributions of RG Baruah in various aspects of society building, with special reference to Dibrugarh and Guwahati.
