Contraband goods worth over Rs 2.5 cr seized

GUWAHATI, June 17 � In the six months leading up to April this year, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) detected 31 cases relating to contraband goods resulting in seizure of over Rs 2.5 crore worth of such items, besides busting of many cases of child trafficking and theft of railway property in the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) zone.

Sources said the RPF detected 31 cases relating to contraband goods like ganja, loose tablets (Pseudo Ephedrine), charas and other stimulants and recovered items valued at Rs 2.59 crore. Besides, ten offenders involved in transportation of contraband products were also nabbed during the period.

The RPF also detected 25 cases of theft of railway property in the NFR zone and recovered stolen property worth over Rs 17.78 lakh and nabbed 44 criminals involved in such acts.

Besides, during this period, that is, between November 2013 and April 2014, RPF personnel apprehended 3,055 offenders under various sections of the Railways Act and over Rs 7.91 lakh was realised as fine by the courts from such offenders.

Altogether, six cases of drugging were detected by the RPF in the NFR zone and nine miscreants involved in drugging of passengers were nabbed.

The cases were subsequently handed over to the General Railway Police (GRP) concerned for registration and investigation, officials said.

During the period under review, 20 minor children were rescued at various places in NFR zone by RPF personnel and two traffickers involved in such activities were nabbed.

There were also some cases related to recovery of arms and explosives, including handmade pistols at the Kamakhya Station and bullets at the Guwahati Railway Station.

The RPF also detected 29 cases of illegal transportation of forest products by trains, leading to recovery of products with a total value of over Rs 3.51 lakh.
