DIBRUGARH, Nov 14 - The Sanmilan meeting of minds, the annual mega event of the Centre for Management Studies, Dibrugarh University got off on Friday on the topic, Commerce, Culture and Connectivity: Bridging North-East India with South-East Asia.

The keynote speaker MP Bezboruah, Permanent Representative (Hon), UN-WTO said that people cannot make easy predictions today as things were changing rapidly. We have to be in the learning mode all the time. North-east policy component includes strategic shift of Indias vision of the world. There is a gap of involvement in the north east. To bridge the gap there should be continuous interaction between the Central Government and the States of the North-east which will result in the North-East opening up, he said.

The guest of honour SK Baruah, Director (Finance) Numaligarh Refinery Limited mentioned that the North-east is a land locked region surrounded by five countries, which, except for China, are not doing well. The Bharat Petroleum Limited tried to supply oil from Silghat to Bangladesh by using the river Brahmaputra route but it did not succeed. He mentioned that presently initiatives were being taken to build pipelines from Manipur to Myanmar and setting up a bio-refinery using bamboo.

Prof Alak Kumar Buragohain, the Vice-Chancellor of Dibrugarh University in his inaugural speech said that Dibrugarh University being the eastern most university of the country and being closest to South-east Asia was of strategic importance. He said that just 300-400 km across the hills were world class universities and connecting with them was indispensable to build a connect between culture, commerce and trade with these regions. Dibrugarh University can stand to play a very vital role in facilitating policy initiatives in this regard, he said.
