Construction companys boulders changing Digaru river course

By Correspondent

JORABAT, Nov 1 - About two months ago, a huge quantity of boulders, piled up on the bank of the Digaru river by a construction company, slid down and blocked a major part of the river following the earthquake on September 12.

The boulders, piled up on the riverbank illegally by the company ABCI Infrastructure Pvt Ltd, were extracted during construction of the railway line in Dimoria area.

The boulders blocked a large part of the river, diverting its course to a certain extent in the area. This has caused apprehension among the local people.

It has been over six weeks since the earthquake caused the boulders to slide down the river, but the construction company has so far failed to clear them.

With the illegally piled-up boulders sliding down and blocking the river under the impact of the earthquake, the construction company was directed to clear the blockage in the river as soon as possible as the diverted route was continuously washing away the shores coming on its extending way.

The company engaged its machinery to clear the river for a few days as a mere eye-wash and then left the work unfinished. This is leading to massive landslides in the area caused by the diverted route.

Seeing their lands being washed away, the locals have expressed anguish and wondered as to why the administration has not compelled the construction company to clear the blockage in the river caused by the boulders.

When contacted, Circle Officer of Sonapur Jenifer Yasmin Choudhury made it clear that no permission was given to the company to pile up the boulders alongside the river and that it was a totally illegal act.

We have also forwarded a report to the higher authorities and a case has also been filed by our field officer in this regard, she added.
